Third Grade at Norton Creek is exciting and challenging! We strive to build independence in our students by modeling the Norton Creek 3B's: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be a Problem Solver.
We used a Balanced Literacy Framework to instruct students daily in Reader's and Writer's Workshop. Students participate in a variety of literacy practices including shared reading/writing, read aloud, guided reading, conferring, independent reading/writing, strategy groups, word work and grammar, and handwriting.
Eureka Math serves as the primary resource for our mathematics instruction. 3rd graders learn multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, measurement and more! Our three goals for fluency are to add and subtract within 1000, multiply and divide within 100, and memorize one-digit multiplication facts.
Our Science curriculum is centered around 4 units: Extreme Weather/Natural Hazards, Science of Flight, Forces and Interactions, and Life and Survival in Ecosystems. We partner with the St. Charles Park District to provide additional support to this learning.
In Social Studies we study geography through map skills. We also explore Native Americans, Immigration and St. Charles History.
